  1. Heat margarine, chocolate, milk, and apricot preserves in a saucepan until chocolate is almost melted. Remove from heat and whisk until fully melted. Add egg yolk and vanilla, then mix in combined dry ingredients.
  2. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar to stiff peaks. Fold the chocolate mixture into the egg whites and add walnuts if desired. Pour the batter into a greased 8-inch square baking pan.
  3. Bake at 350°F for 18-20 minutes until firm. Cool on a wire rack and serve warm or at room temperature.
