  1. Cream butter and sugar together until very well combined.
  2. Separate the eggs.
  3. Add the egg yolks one at a time to the creamed mixture.
  4. Dissolve the soda in the hot water.
  5. Combine the soda mixture with the flour.
  6. Add 1/2 cup of the buttermilk to the batter, then add the flour mixture, and finally the last 1/2 cup of buttermilk.
  7. Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  8. Gently fold the stiff egg whites into the cake batter.
  9. Bake at 350°F for 1 hour.
